‘Everybody’s getting a bike’
Guilford County third graders overwhelmed by surprise of new bicycles
GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — A class of third graders at Peck Elementary School wasn’t expecting new bikes Wednesday.
The class read the book “Think Big, Work Hard, Be Kind, No Excuses,” and wrote an essay. The teachers told them three lucky students would earn a new bike, but that wasn’t the whole story.

The other 31 students found out they would be taking home a bike, too!
“Not because we were giving a bike to them, because they earned a bicycle that’s a huge difference in their life. They’ve never had an article of this magnitude much less a bike which is a very important thing to a third-grade child,” Bikes for Kids Foundation President Robert Krumroy said.
Bikes for Kids is a national program that aims to help end generational poverty through children. It finds sponsors who will support a school through a special curriculum that starts in third grade and follows students through fifth grade.
Superintendent of Guildford County Schools Sharon Contreras and Board Chair Deena Hayes teamed up to help make this special day happen for Peck Elementary School.
“When they find out that they all have done good work, they are all worthy to have bikes,” Contreras said. “It’s the best value for our buck that we could possibly give, it’s the best thing we could do with our Christmas money.”
